Plexus technology

How Plexus connects.

Devices relay data through a wireless mesh to a gateway, then to the cloud. Two radios let the network adapt to the distances and obstacles within your building.

Dual-radio network

Two radios. One mesh.

Nearby devices connect over Bluetooth Low Energy. LoRa carries data further across the site and between floors.

Nearby links and setup

2.4 GHz

Bluetooth Low Energy

Handles nearby device connections and local setup through the mobile app. The network prioritises these short-range links to limit unnecessary radio interference.

Longer-range site coverage

900 MHz

LoRa mesh

Carries data over greater distances and between floors at low power. Plexus uses its own mesh protocol over LoRa, with AU915 in Australia.

Specifications from the Plexus 2026 Info Book. Radio range and floor penetration vary with building materials, layout and device placement.

Self-healing mesh

Data finds a route to the gateway.

Each device receives and relays data towards an available gateway. If a route is interrupted, packets can travel through other devices to get around the obstruction.

The gateway connects to the cloud over Ethernet, Wi-Fi or 4G, falling back automatically when its preferred connection is unavailable.

Security architecture

Security at each stage.

Encryption protects data in transit and at rest. Building permissions control who can view and manage it.

Device links

Traffic between devices is encrypted with AES-128 across both Bluetooth Low Energy and LoRa.

Cloud connections

Gateways use MQTT over TLS, authenticated with AWS-provisioned X.509 certificates. Browser sessions use HTTPS.

Data storage

Data is stored on AWS RDS in Sydney, encrypted with AES-256. Automated daily backups support recovery.

Access and audit

Firebase Authentication manages sign-in. Building-level permissions control access, while device logs record configuration changes, timestamps and the editor.
